01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Spotting the storefront sign and stepping inside, visitors find compact shelves neatly stocked with sweets ranging from traditional namagashi confections to snacks with Western accents. Kanokoya's best-known treat is its white-chocolate-infused strawberries. Rather than applying a thick outer shell, white chocolate is thoroughly steeped into the porous structure of whole freeze-dried strawberries, creating a texture that starts with a crisp, airy snap before melting into a moist, creamy richness. As you chew, the bright tartness of the berry blooms before giving way to milky sweetness, striking a balance that makes it just as fitting for casual daily treats as for souvenirs.
Among the fruit confections, Apple Chocolate—made with Fuji apples from Aomori Prefecture—offers an enjoyable contrast between tangy dried fruit and bittersweet or white chocolate. Alongside these Western-style items, classic Japanese confections hold their own with unpretentious charm. The mame daifuku features plump, tender mochi studded with whole beans and filled with an elegant red bean paste of gentle sweetness, making it substantial yet clean on the palate. Other offerings celebrating natural textures include petite dorayaki pancakes sandwiching moist tsubuan red bean paste, oguri manju enclosing a whole large chestnut, and fragrant baked chestnuts.
Set right where the slope begins near Iidabashi Station, the shop stays open until 21:00 from Tuesday through Saturday. It is a dependable stop when you want to pick up a sweet confection on the way home from work or after an evening meal.
